Corner of Charles Allen - 10am - 2 Hours

Join this session for tips on how to use your camera settings to creatively capture nature in a visually interesting way. We will be looking at composition, focus, and colour.

Many professional offices and places of business have large prints gracing their wall space of things such as fields of flowers, a butterfly perched on a leaf, and a single dew drop on a rose petal. These beautiful images are all around us in nature. It just takes that special "eye" to not only see it but to capture it in a way that will turn that simple little piece of nature into a beautiful piece of art. We will learn how to use different angles, light and shadows, and settings to make subjects pop.

Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Backlighting, Bokeh and Bursts

Saturday 02 November
Corner of Charles Allen - 10am - 2 Hours
Atlanta Photography Club

We will be using various techniques to maximise the behaviour of the light. Backlighting is one of my favourites and can be used for portraiture or nature. Bokeh is Japanese for blur but is a term used for soft out of focus balls of light which can look very pleasing. Burst in this case is star burst which can be achieved when you have strong areas of light and a correct choice of aperture. Use all three to create some amazing compositions.

I enjoyed the fact that we took the opportunity to stroll through the park and Rosa explained and noted the types of tree and flowers around us. She also pointed out composition scenes and how to make the landscape work in a painting.

I focus on using natural materials to create work that helps viewers see nature in new and exciting ways. My goal is to use art to educate the public about environmental issues and inspire action to help preserve and protect our world's wild spaces! This piece of a rabbit was created by crushing flowers onto paper with a hammer to release the pigments within the plant. Once they dried, painted my rabbit friend on top with watercolor.

These are the stairs to the dog park in Piedmont Park. I walk my son's dog there every day. It of significance to me because my daughter in law, Amy St Pierre was killed in a mass shooting incident last year at Northside hospital. Millie was her dog and she used to walk her there every day. I have taken up the duties since her death. It is a remembrance of her.

9x12? Oil Painting on Linen Panel. This is a study piece I completed recently. It took close to 60 painting hours to achieve and it carried many important lessons throughout. From keeping all soft edges in the background to the unique tones and transparency of each grape it was a great learning experience.

This was painted while I was in Architecture school and is a design of Leonardo daVinci's in the 1500s featuring a double helix design. The wringing action of the staircase and stonework while encapsulated within the stone walls gave me the feeling of stretching and a divine beauty, such as a plant will grow within a terrarium and stretch towards the sun despite all odds. The stairs themselves unfurl from the vine as petals. The details within the stone questions the hardness of the material- su

In this painting I wanted to convey the intensity of the fox's stare - that something has caught his eye and he is standing perfectly still watching it! I am always intrigued with how light hits a subject - this is why I love using oil paints as you can get such a depth of colour (I layer up the colours) and then the last few brushstrokes are the highlights and that is when the magic happens!

This is Lucy, one of our favorite family dogs. She is the sweetest pooch and loves to ride in the car, windows opened. She is in her glory as her ears catch the wind and almost smiles. I tried to capture her wonderful nature in this watercolor painting. I used very heavy pigment to give detail to her fur. I so love the many styles watercolor allows you to create. It is one of my favorite paintings because, I Love Lucy:)

This scene is from an early morning boat ride in New Hampshire - we had been here a couple of times over the last few years. It was so quiet and the water so still . The early morning fog had not lifted and people were still not stirring. I snapped a photo when I saw this scene with the colorful leaves framing the waiting boats. I knew I would paint this one day. It?s a 24 x 30 gallery wrapped oil painting. It can be seen at the Elizabethan Gallery.

This is a detail style (aka meticulous style) painting done on a sized shuen paper known as glass paper. Sumi ink and a small brush are used to draw the outlines and a layer of ink washes are added for shading. Then multiple layers of Chines colors are added until the colors reach the intensity you want.
